Smooth Zuccotto with Transparent Lid, Tuscan zuccotto or Florentine zuccotto is a typical dessert of Italian pastry making. It seems to have been created in the Renaissance era by the famous architect and artist Buontalenti, inventor of semifreddo, the ancestor of ice cream. Legend has it that Buontalenti created this spherical-shaped dessert by placing it in a helmet, so much so that the zuccotto was originally called Caterina's Helmet, in honor of Caterina dèMedici.
